According to the new census study, Yiddish is among the languages showing sharp declines. It’s down 50 percent since 1980 to about 160,000 speakers, mostly concentrated in the New York area.
76% of the Yiddish speakers live in New York.
At one time about 100 years ago Yiddish was spoken by 6-7 million people around the world – and Hebrew was hardly a spoken language – now Hebrew (Ivrith) is spoken by 6-7 million people around the world.
Today, there are no more than half
a million Yiddish speakers around the world.
The majority of Yiddish speaking people
are growing older and the average
of the Yiddish speakers
are becoming higher and higher.
Yiddish is alive – and there is a worldwide revival of interest in Yiddish. The means are growing, more Yiddish texts are available to everyone than ever before. There is an up-to-date lexicon (WIKIPEDIA) on Yiddish and in Yiddish available to everyone in the world, there is a search-engine in Yiddish available to everyone who want to find Yiddish texts, there are modern computer programs that can write and read Yiddish. More Yiddish material are available to everyone (YouTube) than ever before. But in order to rescue Yiddish as a living language a massive world-wide coordinated effort on all aspects (education, publication etc.) is now needed to rescue Yiddish as a spoken language. If not now there may never be another chance. “Ve im loh achshav …”.

A notebook containing 85 pages of sketches by Marc Chagall, until now never seen in public,
will be auctioned June 17 in New York.
The work is being sold by a European collector and is expected to bring in
anywhere from dollar 600,000 to dollar 900,000. It has never been on display before.
The book originally belonged to Chagall’s wife Bella,
who filled the first eight pages with Yiddish translations of French poetry.
After Bella Chagall died in the United States in 1944, the painter continued to work in the notebook.

The execution of Jewish writers in USSR
On August 12, 1952, Stalin’s regime executed many of the finest Soviet Yiddish writers. Each year, on the anniversary of their executions, we remember those writers and other artists who suffered under the Soviet regime then, during other purges, and through constant repression.
This year we are pleased to offer a program in English and Yiddish, featuring:

KERLER, YOYSEF (1918–2000), Yiddish poet and editor. Kerler was born in Haysin (Gaisin, Ukraine). When he was seven his family moved to a Jewish kolkhoz (Mayfeld, Crimea). He studied at a Yiddish technical school in Odessa (1934–37), began to study Yiddish literature, and debuted with a poem in the Odeser Arbeter (1935). He studied at the Yiddish Drama School of the Moscow State Yiddish Theater (GOSET, 1937–41). At the outbreak of World War II he enlisted in the Red Army and was wounded three times. His war poems constituted his first book,Far Mayn Erd (“Fighting for My Earth,” 1944). Further poems and articles appeared in Der Emes, Eynikayt, Heymland, Shtern (Kiev), and Folks-Shtime (Warsaw). In 1947 he moved to Birobidjan, worked for Birobidzhaner Shtern, and openly protested the official policy to stop teaching Yiddish in schools. After returning to Moscow, he was arrested (April 1950) and sentenced to 10 years for “anti-Soviet nationalistic activity.” In the Vorkuta Gulag, he wrote and later smuggled out several poem cycles, some of which were included under the guise of “songs of the [Nazi] ghetto” in his second book, appearing in authorized Russian translation only (Vinogradnik Moego Otsa / “My Father’s Vineyard,” 1957), and a few also in his third book Khochu byt’ dobrym (“I’d Love to be Good-Natured,” 1965).

In the Dniester Valley, in Bessarabia, a web of different peoples converged – Balkan, East Slavic, Romanian, Ottoman, Jewish and Gypsy. It was a border culture, bearing the hallmarks of all these traditions. These influences fed the music of Mr. Goldenshteyn.

Sarah Mina Gordon – the well known young Yiddish poet and lead singer of the Yiddish rock band called “Yiddish Princess” – was studying abroad in Israel. In researching a paper on Yiddish poetry, she realized that most of the English translations she was reading had been done by Jewish New Yorkers, much like herself. “What was I doing in Israel? It was a great place, but it wasn’t for me.” She was interested for instance in singing a holiday Song Repertoire. She found her Jewish identity, she says, where she last left it — among the arty Yiddish-loving milieu she grew up with I New York. “I’m not so religious, but I’m incredibly Jewish. And I’m comfortable with that.
People have been saying that Yiddish is about to die for a hundred years,”
Gordon says. But she is proof it won’t. The group will release its first album this month.

Jewish Music Festival
The first concert of the 2010 Pittsburgh Jewish Music Festival, “Hidden Yiddish Treasures,” was an impressive mixture of devotion and discovery.
Presented June 7 at Rodef Shalom Congregation in Shadyside, the concert focused on the music of Leo Zeitlin, a Russian Jewish composer born in 1884 who died in New York City in 1930. Three pieces were dramatic recitations with piano. Zeitlin’s songs were delivered with keen focus by mezzo-soprano Rachael Calloway, baritone Guenko Guechev and the powerful pianist Elisabeth Pridonoff. English translations were projected on a screen at the right side of the stage.
Zeitlin was a violinist and obviously familiar with the great works of chamber music literature. A one-movement string quintet began with a long and deeply expressive melody played in unison, then gained greater expressive power when the five players’ parts separated. The discipline and eloquence of the performers — Dennis O’Boyle and Laura Mothchalov, violins; Marylene Gingras-Roy and Isaias Zelkowicz, violas; and festival founder Aron Zelkowicz, cello — fortunately have been captured for a commercial recording.
The program also included “Two Yiddish Songs” freshly composed by David Stock, which were completely idiomatic.
The humor and infectious musical energy of Yiddish folk music and cabaret repertoire provided a charming change of pace thanks to the irresistible singer Daniella Rabbani, with Dmitri Slepovitch at the piano.
On June 13-14, the festival concluded with a triple threat of formidable Jewish female performers: vocalist Adrienne Cooper, pianist Marilyn Lerner and violinist Alicia Svigals, well-known as the co-founder of the famous klezmer band, The Klezmatics.

Mame-loshen in the heartland
Why? Because Wisconsin — through the two biggest campuses in the University of Wisconsin System — is poised to become a major center for the study of the language and culture of Yiddish, the great mama-loshn (mother tongue) of the Jews of Eastern Europe.
First, the University of Wisconsin-Madison officially announced in April (though news reports began appearing in January) that it will be creating the Mayrent Institute for Yiddish Culture and will be hiring as director Henry Sapoznik, renowned performer, scholar and teacher of klezmer music.
Second, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee announced in May that it has hired Berkowitz to be the new director of that institution’s Sam and Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies — and Berkowitz is an expert on Yiddish theater.
But as distinctive as will be each institutions’ offerings and work, these developments also constitute examples of a world-wide “explosion of interest” in Yiddish and its culture, according to Aaron Lansky, director of the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, Mass.

The story chronicles the life of the “wise fool” Gimpel, who comes to realize profound truths about love, evil, and spiritual faith. Originally published in Yiddish, “Gimpel the Fool” (Gimpel Tam) made its first appearance in English in 1953, translated by the writer Saul Bellow, in the journalPartisan Review.
The plight of poor Gimpel the Fool is evident before the first word is spoken in this one-man production adapted from the classic short story by Yiddish-language Nobel laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer at Orlando Nephesh Theatre.

When the title character emerges from the shadows, he’s carrying a burdensome sack that’s enough to make his aching shoulders sag. At the same time, his world-weary smile exudes utter childlike innocence.
Gimpel, played with understated compassion by Tel Aviv-based actor Howard Rypp, is a gullible fool. He’s the fall guy for pranks big and small: He’s hoodwinked by kids pretending to be barking dogs or by a shrew of a wife who has six children – all by other men.
As the cruel injustices mount, Gimpel’s sad gift for rationalization at first inspires sympathy, but eventually makes you want to wring his neck and drag him to the nearest assertiveness training seminar.

A scandal, a shame
My mother, may she rest in peace, would have called this a shanda (shandeh), the Yiddish word for a shame, something you’re not proud of and that you’d rather your neighbor doesn’t find out.
So shame is what I thought about and felt when I read the latest survey by academic researchers for the Meals on Wheels Association of America. It found that in 2008, at the beginning of this Great Recession, nearly six percent of Americans over the age of 60, more than 2.7 million, suffered from hunger. Not just the lack of enough food, but hunger. A Yiddish speaking Star
The policedepartements are hunting this Yiddish-speaking Nigerian national named John Star who jumped bail after he was charged in a massive mortgage scam.
John Star, 39, learned Yiddish while growing up in Switzerlandwith Orthodox Jewish adoptive parents. He moved easily in Orthodox real estate sources and hatched a scheme that bilked lenders of $10 million, officials said. He turned out not to be glatt kosher.
He and his accomplices submitted false loan applications that said properties were being purchased by credit-worthy buyers, authorities charged. Shortly after pocketing the loans, the defendants stopped making payments on the mortgages.Star’s lawyer, Anthony Mamo, declined to comment yesterday.

Does an English word really become mamme-loshen just because you ad an ‘ike’ ind the end –
or does the word stay YINGLISH in spite of the aquiring the ending ‘ike’ ?
Just because a word in a foreign language like English get an ending like ‘ike’ and is used by a Yid –
or several Yidden – it does not necessarily make it a Yiddish word.
‘Nextdorike’, ‘apsterike’ and ‘donsterike’ are nothing but Yinglish –
and only Yidden in America would call such words Yiddish.

Lets look at some examples. ‘Nextdoor’ in Danish is NABO. A person living upstairs are called OVERBO and a person living below you are callede UNDERBO in Danish. Putting the end of ‘ike’ behind those words would NOT made them Yiddish words, but at the best made them DANDISH or ‘DANLISH‘:
NABOLIKE, OVERBOLIKE, UNDERBOLIKE are not Yiddish words and probably sound as little mamme-loshen to Vortsman, as ‘Nextdorike’, ‘apsterike’ and ‘donsterike’ sound Yiddish to THE KOPJIK TEAM. NABOLIKE, OVERBOLIKE, UNDERBOLIKE will never become mamme-loshen – just as ‘Nextdorike’, ‘apsterike’ and ‘donsterike’ never become anything but YINGLISH to a non-american Jew, NABOLIKE, OVERBOLIKE, UNDERBOLIKE will forever stay DANLISH and never become mamme-loshen to any american Jew.
What then is it that make a word borrowed from a foreign language an accepted word in Yiddish?
Certainly not the ending as Vortsman seem to think. Yiddish do have lots of word with typical Hebrew, Russian or Polish endings. “Fiddler on the Roof”

In 1964, the original production of “Fiddler” won three Tony awards, including Best Score and Best Musical. Forty-six years after it began its initial Broadway run of 3242 performances, there is still hardly a day when the show isn’t being staged somewhere. It has had four Broadway revivals, the most recent in 2004, and has been translated into languages from Yiddish to Hindi.
In the fictional village of Anatevka in 1905, “Fiddler” tells the story of Tevya, a poor dairyman; his wife and five daughters; and the small Jewish community of which they are a part. Life is difficult but shaped by tradition before unsettling new ideas sweep old beliefs away. Pressed between his age-old faith and his need to adapt, Tevya struggles to protect his family and maintain his personal equilibrium.
Acknowledging that he and Robbins, along with composer Jerry Bock and librettist Joe Masteroff, were the descendents of Jewish immigrants, Harnick (86) adds, “One of the show’s early titles was ‘Where Papa Came From.’ In a way it was dedicated to our fathers, who left their own shtetls to make new lives here. We were the beneficiaries.
Harnick also recalled how Robbins immersed them in that world. “He took us to Hasidic weddings so we could see the way they separated the men and women, and carried the bride and groom around on chairs above their heads,” he says. “At one of them, we saw this old man who danced with a bottle balanced on his head, and that’s where that idea came from.” Robbins used it as the centerpiece of the rousing all-male dancing during the wedding celebration for Tevya’s oldest daughter, Tzeitel, and Motel the Tailor.

Jewish center gets $1 million gift
The Mosse/Weinstein Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has received a $1 million gift and more than 6,000 rare recordings to establish what it says will be a first of its kind institute devoted to Yiddish culture.
The Mayrent Institute for Yiddish Culture will be directed by Henry Sapoznik.
The endowment is the gift of Sherry Mayrent and spouse Carol Master through the Corners Fund for Traditional Cultures, a donor-advised fund of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies. Mayrent, associate director of KlezKamp, is one of the foremost collectors of rare Yiddish and Hebrew music recorded between 1895 and 1955.
The endowment will support the centerpiece of the institute, Mayrent’s collection of more than 6,000 78-rpm recordings, which will be donated to the university’s Mills Music Library.

The 13th annual International Association of Yiddish Clubs conference, titled “Yiddish Around the World,” will take place April 23 to 26 on the Peninsula. Dozens of presenters and hundreds of Yiddish lovers are expected to attend the event at the Westin Hotel, 1 Old Bayshore Highway, Millbrae.
Co-sponsored by KlezCalifornia, the conference will include entertainment, classes, lectures and Shabbat services. Workshop subjects include such diverse topics as “Jews of Japan,” “Impact of the Jewish Labor Movement,” “Yiddish Culture in Comic Strips” and many more. Most classes will be in English, but many will be conducted in Yiddish.

Yiddish buffs from near and far shlep to Millbrae

Phil Kutner calls them “virtual shtetls” — the 100 Yiddish clubs around the world, with some 4,000 members kibitzing in person or online, keeping the Mamaloshen alive.
For more than 20 years from his home in San Mateo, Kutner has been a driving force with the International Association of Yiddish Clubs, both as a founding delegate and as the macher behind Der Bay, an Anglo-Yiddish newsletter he publishes monthly.
Add one more feather in his Yiddishe kop. Kutner, 83, will serve as master of ceremonies for the 13th IAYC conference, a four-day gathering starting Friday, April 23 at the Westin San Francisco Airport in Millbrae. It’s the first time the event has been held in Northern California, and Kutner is expecting scores of club delegates from across North America, Israel, South Africa and Spain.
Kutner and his IAYC colleagues booked what he says will be an interesting lineup of speakers and workshop leaders. The general idea is to mix learning with freilach (joy), so several entertainers will perform as well.
Speakers include Zachary Baker of the Stanford University Judaica library, Joel Schechter of San Francisco State University, Yiddish professor Chava Lapin of Queens College in New York, and Sheva Zucker, a Yiddish professor, author and translator.
One guest speaker, Yosiji Hirose, is a Yiddish expert from Japan.
Performers include singer Cindy Paley from the San Fernando Valley, local klezmer favorite Gerry Tenney, Yiddish dance expert Ruth Botchan of Berkeley and the Jewish Folk Chorus of San Francisco.
But the real stars of the show are the attendees: lovers of Yiddish who collectively form a center of linguistic gravity.
“We fall into three categories,” Kutner says of the IAYC membership. “Academia and native speakers; people who have taken a few courses or were raised on [Yiddish] but not fluent. Then a third are beginners.”
Kutner is no beginner. As a kid in Harlem and later New Jersey, he grew up in a Yiddish-speaking home. As an adult he lost touch with the language, becoming a high school and university earth sciences teacher. Two decades ago, however, his interest was rekindled, and he began studying Yiddish anew.
He also started Der Bay (The Bay), which over the years has grown from one printed sheet into a 16-page newsletter and a Web-based monthly (it includes a calendar of club events and a pen-pal pool of nearly 500 Yiddish enthusiasts). He is also active with the National Yiddish Book Center and the Workmen’s Circle.
Like Yiddish speakers of old, the debate continues over which dialect is the most authentic: Litvak or Galitzianer. But Kutner says the debate has calmed down since a standard Yiddish, with more Galitzianer grammar and more Litvak pronunciation, emerged in the 1930s.
The odds have been stacked against Yiddish over the last 100 years. Hitler wiped out vast numbers of native speakers. Migration to the United States and assimilation further decimated the number. And though Yiddish lives on as a daily language in small Chassidic communities, Hebrew began dominating as the language of many Jews, especially in Israel, of course.
But not entirely.
There’s a “big push” to learn Yiddish among young people in Israel, Kutner says. “Three universities teach Yiddish. Bar-Ilan University has 10 Yiddish instructors, and 57 [Israeli] high schools teach Yiddish as a second language. You also have the entire Chassidic community, where everybody speaks Yiddish.”
In the Bay Area, U.C. Berkeley regularly offers a Yiddish class and has done so for the last six years.
The klezmer revival has done a lot to crank up the interest in Yiddish language and culture; even Yiddish theater is on the rise again.
The 2000 census counted nearly 179,000 speakers of Yiddish in the United States — and the U.S. Census Bureau made some news recently by providing informational materials in Yiddish (visithttp://www.tinyurl.

The Bay Area is home to IAYC clubs in San Francisco, Contra Costa County, Santa Rosa and beyond, some meeting as often as twice a month. Kutner describes three kinds of Yiddish clubs: the shraybkrayz is for the most fluent. Then there is the leyenkrayz (reading circles). And for beginners there is the shmoozekrayz.
“It’s easier to do it in larger cities like L.A. and the Bay Area,” he says. “Our clubs average 25 to 50 members, with some as large as 650 and some as small as 10.”
Of course, when the club members gather, sometimes they get stumped on vocabulary. Being that Yiddish evolved around 1,000 years ago, it isn’t always totally up to date. That’s when the club members get creative.
“We have Yinglish,” Kutner says. “The Yiddish word for computer is ‘computer.’ ”
