Al-Qaida has never hidden its interest in acquiring nuclear weapons.
In an interview scheduled to be televised on Monday, Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir said Ayman al-Zawahri claimed that “smart briefcase bombs” were available on the black market.
“Dr Ayman al-Zawahri laughed and he said ‘Mr. Mir, if you have $30 million, go to the black market in central Asia, contact any disgruntled Soviet scientist, and a lot of … smart briefcase bombs are available,'” Mir said in the interview.
“They have contacted us, we sent our people to Moscow, to Tashkent, to other central Asian states and they negotiated, and we purchased some suitcase bombs,” Mir quoted al-Zawahri as saying.

Briefcase-nuke (SADM).
Bin Laden personally never has made any secret of his determination to acquire nuclear weapons either. In 1998 he issued a statement, “The Nuclear Bomb of Islam” in which he declared that “it is the duty of Muslims to prepare as much force as possible to terrorize the enemies of God.” In an interview with Time magazine that same year, bin Laden danced around the question of whether he possessed nuclear devices by saying, “If I have indeed acquired these weapons, then I thank God for enabling me to do so.”

Former bin Laden aide Jamal al-Fadl reportedly told the FBI when being questioned about these bombings that he witnessed al-Qaeda members trying to buy enriched uranium in the mid-1990s. He also claimed to have been assigned by bin Laden to buy uranium in 1993 from a Sudanese military officer but unexpectedly was taken off the assignment. Al-Fadl testified he did not know if the purchase ever was completed.

A ‘Suitcase nuclear bomb’.
A group of dedicated terrorists without nuclear backgrounds could assemble a bomb if it had the right materials (such as plutonium 239, uranium 235, plutonium oxide and uranium oxide). It would take about a year to complete the job. “There’s little question that the only remaining obstacle is the acquisition of the material,” says Paul Leventhal, the Nuclear Control Institute.

According to author Paul L. Williams in his recent book Osama’s Revenge – the Next 9/11, “In 1996, David Z. and his Mafia associates in Chechyna allegedly purchased a shipment of Special Atomic Demolition Munitions (SADMs), or “nuclear suitcases” from former KGB officials…For the weapons, bin Laden paid $30 million in cash and two tons of heroin that had been refined in his laboratories in Afghanistan.” (street value of $700 million).

The first SADMs were very expensive to maintain and too heavy for practical use. They had to be carried in crates that measured 4 feet by 2.5 feet with a weight that exceeded eight hundred pounds. During the 1970s, the weapons were streamlined so that they could be transported in cases measuring 2 feet by 1.5 feet with a weight of 320 pounds. These modified nukes consisted of three coffee-can-sized aluminium canisters that had to be connected by a crew of five – a commander, a radio officer, and three army technicians – before detonation. Each weapon could produce an explosive yield of at least one kiloton – enough to topple not only the Twin Towers, but also much of lower Manhattan.” (Paul L. Williams is currently being sued by McMaster University for upwards of $2-Million, as a result of his claims that Islamic terrorists managed to steal 180lbs of unspecified nuclear material from the McMaster Nuclear Reactor. The University has extracted an apology from the publisher of Dunces of Doomsday, WND Books/Cumberland House Publishing, who now say that statements made in Williams’ book about the theft are “without basis in fact.” Williams himself is standing behind his claims. But leading sources, including Scott Wheeler and Bill Gertz of The Washington Times, support the allegations, and videotape evidence exists of the complete lack of security at the McMaster facility. In addition, the Belfer Center of Harvard University recently published a report verifying the presence of leading al Qaeda operatives, including Adnan el-Shukrijumah, on the McMaster campus. A claim supported by Janice Kephardt of the 9/11 Commission.
Beside the above mentioned a greater danger may lie in dirty bombs, conventional weapons used to spray radioactive material – anything from used reactor rods to contaminated clothing – over wide areas.
Contamination — occurs when radioactive materials in the form of solids, liquids or gases are released into the air and contaminate people externally, internally or both. This happens when body parts such as the skin become contaminated and/or if the harmful material gets inside the body via the lungs, gut or wounds.
