The image of the Holocaust survivor who started afresh in the aftermath of the camps is familiar and powerful. We see it in films, in literature, and in our own families. The degree of transformation in these survivors – from dehumanization to success in a foreign country – is so compelling that it’s understandable why the media tend to focus in on such stories.

But that image of ‘the Holocaust survivor’ is beginning to change.

Remembering the dead soldiers and terror offers in Israel


Yom Hazikron is the day on which Israel honors its war veterans. The day opens the preceding evening at sunset, with a siren. The siren is heard all over the country and lasts for one minute, during which Israelis stop everything (including driving, which stops highways) and stand in silence, commemorating the fallen and showing respect.
