Censorship in ERETZ JISROEL !!!

Mordecha Vanunu 11 years in prison for

using his human rights in Israel.

Shame on you Israel

The whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu (a former technician at the Dimona nuclear plant)

who leaked details and pictures to the Sunday Times of London in 1986, and was then kidnapped by Israeli intelligence agents in Rome and brought back to trial in Israel.

At trial Vanunu was imprisoned for 18-year in solitary confinement.

When he had served 11 years of his 18-year sentence in 2004 he was released on parole – on condition that he stayed in Israel and did not contact any foreigners and did not leave Israel.

The imprisonment – and the parole conditions – is a clear-cut violation of Mordechai Vanunu’s human rights (freedom of speech and right to leave the country).

The Israeli authorities are accusing him of having contact with a number of foreigners, including journalists, and a Norwegian woman Vanunu claim is his girlfriend.

Mordechai Vanunu have now been arrested again (December 2009) and recently again imprisoned (May 2010) accused of violating the parole conditions. He will now have to serve a further three months of imprisonment for exercising his human rights.

“Shame on you Israel…for putting me in prison after 24 years of speaking the truth” and “Shame on you all the world media … for not protecting freedom of speech,” Mordechai Vanunu said outside the courthouse 23.5.2005 when put into prison again.

Haredim asked to report

Jerusalem ‘modesty squad’ says computers containing ‘abominations’ found in apartments rented by yeshiva students, calls on capital’s residents to ‘stand guard’

Posters displayed throughout ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods in Jerusalem are calling on residents to report yeshiva students who own computers and are connected to the internet for fear of “to’eva (abomination).”

The posters are signed by the “Committee for Preserving Our Camp’s Purity,” one of the so-called “modesty squads” operating in Jerusalem.

Some yeshiva students who cannot find rooms in the overcrowded haredi dormitories in the capital rent their own flats. Rabbis who have forbidden the use of computers are demanding greater supervision over tenants and landlords.

“Regretfully, computers containing all sorts of to’eva have been found in apartments that have been rented out to the boys (yeshiva students) without supervision,” the posters read. “Gedolei Yisrael (most revered rabbis of the generation) have forbidden yeshiva students from owning computers, and therefore it was decided during a meeting of neighborhood rabbis and educators to stand guard. To file a complaint call this number…”

Over the past few years prominent ultra-Orthodox rabbis and educators have been trying to prevent the use of computers and the internet within the community.

Despite attempts to make internet use ‘kosher’ and the launching of a number of haredi news websites, most prominent rabbis prohibit internet connection altogether, while others permit internet use for work purposes only – but not inside the house.

Editors note:

Haredi (חֲרֵדִי) is derived from charada,

meaning fear or anxiety,

“someone who trembles in awe of God”.

But a rabbi who – like any dictator – is trying to censor

the internet out of fear – is simply not serving God …

and “NOT KOSHER”.

God created all men and

therefore all Jews free  and equal.

If they do censor the WWW –

Haredi’s no longer deserve to be callede Haredi’s

they ought to be called the

Jewish Taleban’s.

Rabbis:

Cellular internet must be

filtered (i. e. censored)

Religious Zionism leaders – including Rabbis Drukman, Stav and Yehoshua Shapira – call upon public not to connect to internet without filtering service. Ynet learns heads of many educational institutions considering making censored format condition for accepting students

Rabbis and educators in the Religious Zionism movement are calling upon the public not to connect to the internet without a content filter, now even on mobile devices like cellular modems or mobile phones.

“The ease at which one can deteriorate to the edge of the abyss is dangerous,” explained one of the rabbis. “Our cultural way of dealing with the issue of internet needs to be at the forefront of our education that we all share.”

Haredi authorities forbid television and films, reading secular newspapers and using the Internet for non-business purposes. They feel that mobile phones should be programmed to disable internet and other functions that could influence their users in undesired ways, and most companies in Israel now offer basic cell phones with limited capabilities to accommodate Haredim. However, it appears that many Haredi people use the Internet, as evidenced by the large number of participants in “Haredi chat rooms”.

An agreement was recently reached with Cellcom and Rimon Internet that will allow their internet customers to filter online content through a service offered recently. On the heels of this agreement, two rabbinical notices have been issued that obligate the observant public to choose Cellcom and the filter service.

Among those signed on the notices are prominent rabbis and educators identified with various streams of Religious Zionism, such as Rabbi Haim Drukman, Safed’s Chief Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, Head of the Ramat Gan Yeshiva Rabbi Yehoshua Shapira, and Tzohar Chairman Rabbi David Stav.

“We are calling upon the public of all ages absolutely not to surf the internet without a filtering service – not at home, not in the office, not on the laptop, not on the cell phone, and not on the property of the yeshivas and educational institutions and their surroundings,” wrote the rabbis.

“In addition, we are turning to the heads of the institutions and organizations not to allow unprotected surfing among their students and employees.”

The next step: Filtering students?

Ynet learned that many educational leaders are already considering adopting the practice, widespread in the haredi community, of conditioning students’ acceptance into their schools on their surfing on filtered internet only.

The main concern of the rabbis is not on internet desktop computers, which in any case are more controlled, but on portable devices, particularly cell phones, on which access to the internet can be obtained anywhere.

“As people who deal in education and meet the broad public on a daily basis, we are well acquainted with the challenges the world of the internet places before youth and adults – with its advantages and with its great dangers,” summarized the rabbis in their letter. “Many individuals and families – young and old, men and women – have been harmed by these dangers, without any need to go into detail.”
