Jewish Culture Festival

The annual Jewish Culture Festival in Krakow, Poland, the largest festival of its kind in the world, is a panoply of Jewish arts, music, workshops, film, exhibitions, and heritage tours, celebrating Jewish life and commemorating the thousand-year history of Jews in Poland.

One of the best-known artists on the contemporary reggae scene, Matisyahu, is a beatboxer, rapper, and Hassid rolled up in one. His vision of reggae music is closely connected with the Hassidic tradition – after all, he is an Orthodox Jew who sings religious texts. A one-of-a-kind Rastaman in a yarmulke!

Da Matisyahu udkom med sit første album i 2004, troede folk at det var en joke. Han fusionerer ortodoks jødedom med traditionel dancehall, synkoperede afrikanske rytmer, akustisk guitar og tilbagelænede dubs serveret med et dragende og sublimt rytmisk flow.

Han er opdraget traditionelt jødisk, som han i sine tidlige teenageår gjorde modstand imod. Men som 14-årig vendte han alligevel tilbage til jødedommen, og snart derefter tog han til Israel for at lære om sin kulturelle baggrund.

I sine highschool år startede kærligheden for hiphop og reggae, og han begyndte at rappe og toaste.

A GALICIAN TREASURE
Leopold Kozłowski

He has been called “the last klezmer of Galicia” and “the treasure of Kazimierz.” This pianist, composer, and conductor is the last prewar klezmer living in Poland. He is the grandson of Pejsach Brandwein, who, with his dozen musical sons, founded the most famous klezmer band in Galicia. One of Kozlowski’s uncles is the clarinetist Naftule Brandwein, regarded in America as the “king of klezmer.”

Kozłowski was born before the war in Przemyślany, near Lwów. He is a graduate of the Lwów Conservatory and the State Higher Music School in Cracow. He has been musical director of the Jewish Theater in Warsaw and the Gypsy group Roma, as well as musical consultant for the Rzeszowiacy ensemble.

He founded the Cracow Military district Song and Dance Ensemble. He wrote the Polish version of the musical Fiddler on the Roof and has composed theater and film music, including “Austeria”, the Polish sequences of “The Winds of War”, “War and Love”, the Gypsy sequences in “Spring Waters”, and the camp and ghetto music in “Schindler’s List”. He also played an investor in Schindler’s List. He appeared with Itzhak Perlman in the film “In the Fiddler’s House”. The film “The Last Klezmer” recounts his life and work. His arrangements of Jewish songs can be found on the album “Leopold Kozłowski—ostatni klezmer Galicji”.

During this year’s concert at the Tempel synagogue, Leopold Kozłowski will be accompanied by his Friends Jacek Cygan, Katarzyna Jamróz, Renata Świerczyńska, Kamila Klimczak, Marta Bizoń, Andrzej Róg, Jacek Hołubowski, and Halina Jarczyk.

Kl.14:15 guidet tur i byen Auschwitz, hvor ca. 60 % af befolkningen, før krigen var jøder.

c.)   mulighed for at se de berømte saltminer i Wieliczka og saltkatedralen som ligger i udkanten af Krakow.

med deltagelse af de fleste bands der har optrådt under festivalen – fri adgang.

En vigitg by idet gamle Galicien hvorfra bl.a. kendte chassidim som Horowitz og Halberstam kom fra.

Kl. 10:30 på vej til Tarnow stopper vi i Zblitowska Gora – skov hvor Tarnow jøderne blev myrdet.

Kl. 11:15 guidet tur i Tarnow

Kl. 14:00 frokost på egen hånd.

Kl. 15:30 med bus retur til Krakow.

Kl. 09:00 Check ud fra hotellet. Vi kører med bus til Dunajec: tømmerflåde sejlads, på floden Dunajec

mellem de omkringliggende smukke bjerge.

Kl. 10:30 starter turen som varer ca.2½ time.

Kl. 13:00 ankomst til Szczawnica en lille fiskerby og et kursted.

Kl 13:15 frokost på egen hånd

Kl. 14:45 afgang med bus til lufthavnen i Katowice

Kl. 19:55 flyafgang med Wizzair til Malmø

Kl. 21:45 kørsel med bus til København

Hele ugen er det muligt at deltage f.eks. i følgende værksteder m.m.:

Synagoge, Jiddish undervisning, Hebraisk undervisning, Jødisk papirklip, Hebraisk kalligrafi, Keramik værksted, Værksteder for børn, undervisning i jødisk dans, Jødisk madlavning, Sang workshop med jiddishe lieder, chassidisk sang-work shop, genealogisk værksted, klezmer værksted, Meron Mish Mosh, vinsmagning. Derudover er der film, Jam sessions med jazz og Natparty.
