Pope Benedict visited Rome’s synagogue – and was scolded because he intend to sanctify one of his predecessors, Pope Pius XII.

Pope Benedict XVI’ have visited Rome’s synagogue – his third visit of a synagogue since becoming pope in 2005.

When entering the synagogue, Jewish leaders showed the pope a plaque recalling the deportation of Rome Jews by Germans on Oct. 16, 1943 and another plaque dedicated to a two-year-old boy killed in the gun and grenade attack on the synagogue in 1982.

The president of Rome’s Jewish community mr. Riccardo Pacifici, told Pope Benedict on Sunday that his  predecessor during WWII, Pius XII, should have been more outspoken and have forcefully reacted against the Holocaust to show solidarity with Jews being led to the certain death in Auschwitz.

Jewish groups have reacted angrily last month when Benedict, himself a German who was enrolled in the Hitler Youth and German army as a teenager during World War Two, approved a decree recognizing Pius’s “heroic virtues”.

The Vatican holds that Pius was not silent during the WWII, but worked behind the scenes, concerned that public intervention would have worsened the situation for both Jews and Catholics in a wartime Europe dominated by Hitler.
