Following the success of our previous courses we are glad to offer a Yiddish language and literature course again in 2014 as part of our upcoming cultural and educational program. The course comprises 10 days of intensive Yiddish language study at three levels, beginners, medium and advanced, as well as a variety of workshops, lectures, concerts, guided tours and other Yiddish cultural events. Our Yiddish course was developed in cooperation with Beth Shalom Aleichem of Tel Aviv and Yung Yiddish. We are all looking forward to hosting you in Beit Ben Yehuda in Jerusalem for our Yiddish language course where you will enjoy world-class language instruction by highly experienced professional teachers and gain insight into the language, literature, music and culture of Jews of Eastern European origin.

Yiddish Summer Program, at the TelAvivUniversity campus from June 27 to July 21, 2011.
The program offers intensive Yiddish instruction at five levels. Language instruction will be supplemented by an afternoon program of lectures, conversation workshops, tours, and by evening cultural and social events. Located minutes away from both the center of Tel Aviv and its beaches, TAU is the largest university in Israel, with significant resources in Jewish Studies, among them the DiasporaMuseum and the Margulies Yiddish Book.

Yiddish I. Introduction to standard Yiddish conversation, grammar, and writing for both English and Hebrew speakers.
Yiddish II. For students who have attained basic Beginners’ Yiddish, this class is divided into two parts, one on developing composition and conversational skills and the other on reading and discussing literary texts.
Yiddish III. For students whose knowledge goes beyond basic Beginners’ Yiddish, this course is also divided into two parts, one on developing composition and conversational skills and the other on reading and discussing literary texts.
Yiddish IV. For students nearly fluent in Yiddish, this course will include a significant literature component as well as improving both writing and reading comprehension.
Yiddish V. This advanced course is designed both to improve fluency with emphasis on idiomatic usage of the language, and to analyze selected texts in modern Yiddish literature.
Lecture Series. A series of lectures in English on “Landmarks of Yiddish Literature” can be audited or taken for one additional credit (requiring written work). Afternoon Academic and Cultural Program Afternoon workshops, lectures and activities will be held on the TelAviv University campus. Activities will include conversation classes, a music workshop and concerts. There will also be opportunities to play klezmer music. Students are encouraged to bring their musical instruments with them.
The costs of the program are: $ 1450 tuition + $ 60 registration fee + $ 450 for housing (double occupancy), or $ 600 (single occupancy).

Bill Clinton on Russian Jews in Israel
Russian immigrants to Israel have emerged as a central obstacle to achieving a Middle East peace deal, according to former President Bill Clinton. He voiced fears that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), which increasingly consists of soldiers hailing from this community, might not be fully willing to oppose Israeli settlers as a result.
In a roundtable with reporters during his Clinton Global Initiative conference in New York, Clinton made his most extensive remarks on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process that his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is spearheading.
“An increasing number of the young people in the IDF are the children of Russians and settlers, the hardest-core people against a division of the land. This presents a staggering problem,” Clinton said. “It’s a different Israel. 16 percent of Israelis speak Russian.”
According to Clinton, the Russian immigrant population in Israel is the group least interested in striking a peace deal with the Palestinians. “They’ve just got there, it’s their country, they’ve made a commitment to the future there,” Clinton said. “They can’t imagine any historical or other claims that would justify dividing it.”
To illustrate his view on the Russian immigrant community, Clinton related a conversation he had with Natan Sharansky, the former Soviet dissident turned Israeli parliamentarian, who he said was the only Israeli minister to reject the comprehensive peace agreement Clinton proposed at the Camp David Summit in 2000. The proposal was eventually rejected by Palestinian President Yasser Arafat.
“I said, ‘Natan, what is the deal [about not supporting the peace deal],'” Clinton recalled. “He said, ‘I can’t vote for this, I’m Russian… I come from one of the biggest countries in the world to one of the smallest. You want me to cut it in half. No, thank you.'”
Clinton responded, “Don’t give me this, you came here from a jail cell. It’s a lot bigger than your jail cell.”
Clinton used the anecdote to explain the Russian immigrant population’s attitude toward a land-for- peace deal with the Palestinians. “[Sharansky] was nice about it, a lot of them aren’t,” Clinton said.
Clinton then ranked the Israeli sub-national groups in order of his perception of their willingness to accept a peace deal. The “most pro-peace Jewish Israelis” are the Sabras, who he described as native-born Israelis whose roots there date back millennia, because they have the benefit of historical context. “They can imagine sharing a future.”
Ashkenazi Jews who emigrated from Europe and have been in Israel for one or more generations are the next most supportive of a peace deal, Clinton said.
The “swing voters” are what Clinton called the “Moroccans”: North African Jews who immigrated to Israel in the 1970s. He described them as right-of-center citizens who nevertheless want normal, stable lives.
“When they think peace is possible, they vote peace. When they think it’s not, they vote for the toughest guys on the block,” Clinton said.
Regarding the settlers, Clinton said that their numbers had grown so much since 2000 that their longstanding opposition to giving up their homes in exchange for peace might be more entrenched and therefore a bigger challenge than before.
“In 2000, you could get 97 percent of the settlers on 3 percent of the land. Today, you have to give almost 6 percent of the land to get 80 percent of the settlers,” said Clinton. “There were 7,000 settlers in Gaza and it took 55,000 Israeli forcespeople to move. Somewhere between 50,000 and 60,000 settlers will have to be moved out of the West Bank.”
Clinton spoke extensively about the positives and negatives he sees in the ongoing direct peace talks launched by the Obama administration.
“I’d say their chances are at least 50-50,” Clinton said optimistically.
The Palestinians’ internal divisions, specifically the lack of Palestinian control over the Gaza Strip,present another problem, but one that a peace deal could help solve, he suggested.
“That makes it more difficult for Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu to make a deal and to wonder what a deal means,” he said. But if there’s a deal on the table, that would create enough pressure for an election in Gaza that PresidentMahmoud Abbas‘ Fatah party would win, Clinton argued.
“I believe if there were an election in Gaza today, Fatah would win because of the greater prosperity and the greater security produced under Abbas and Fayyad,” Clinton said, adding that Fatah only lost in Gaza elections because of intra-party faction fighting that saw many candidates run against others in their own party.
There are some factors that point to improved conditions for making a peace deal as compared to 2000, said Clinton. He pointed to the fact that two-thirds of Israelis trust Netanyahu to make a peace deal, more than when Ehud Barak was negotiating, according to Clinton. Also, he said that he has faith that the current Palestinian Authority leadership is serious about reaching a settlement.
“They won’t do what Arafat did, they won’t get up to the deal and lose their nerve. They know what the future looks like.”
In the long term, Israelis will face increased pressures, Clinton said. Because of the high Palestinian birth rate, Israel will become a Palestinian-majority state sometime in the next 30 years, if it does not give up the West Bank.
“Then they will have to decide either to be a Jewish state or a democracy, but they cannot be both. They don’t want to face that. They don’t want to face not only the international legitimacy question but also the internal identity crisis.”
Moreover, Clinton said, Hamas militants will soon have military technology that will allow their relatively low-damage attacks on Israeli population centers to have greater accuracy and lethality.
“It’s just a matter of time before the rockets have a GPS system on ‘em and a few rockets will kill a whole lot of people. Netanyahu understands that,” said Clinton.
He also said that Arab leaders were on board with Middle East peace now more than ever, partly because they now have Iran as a boogeyman to deflect attention from their unpopular policies.
“They think they’ve got a real enemy in Iran now, so they don’t need a faux enemy in Israel to keep people in the street directed at somebody besides them.”
Before pontificating on the peace process, Clinton seemed to realize he was stepping into some sensitive territory, but decided to proceed nonetheless.
“I wouldn’t say too much about this if Hillary weren’t Secretary of State and in charge of these negotiations, so I’m darned sure not going to say too much now,” he said, before going in depth on the issue for over 10 minutes.

Five rockets have been fired at Eilat.
This morning five rockets were fired at Eilat. Fortunately terrorists do not aim very good. Israeli police said the rockets struck at about 7:45 am (0445 GMT) on 2.8.2010. There is no sign that any of the rockets had hit inside Eilat’s city limits. There were no casualties in Eilat. Three rockets landed in the sea (two in Jordanian sea and one in Eilat Bay) and one fell on an open area.

At about the same time, the fifth of the rockets – a Grad-type rocket – slammed into Aqaba, and the Russian-designed missile struck at a street near Intercontinental Hotal in Aqaba, less than 10 kilometers from Eilat, injuring five civilians, one of them seriously. He, the 40-year-old Subhi al-Alauna, died of his wounds some hours later.

A Jordanian official close to the investigation said: the rocket was fired from a location “southwest” of Aqaba – indicating Egypt‘s Sinai desert. Egypt has denied that its territory was used to launch the apparent attack. An Israeli military source said the same. “It’s probable that the rockets were fired from the direction of Egypt“. The Israeli military said it was investigating the source of the fire and was in constant contact with the authorities in Egypt and Jordan.

An Egyptian security official said: “The rockets did not come from Sinai. To launch rockets from Sinai would need a great deal of logistics and equipment and that is impossible considering the heavy security presence in the Sinai peninsula , and that no suspicious activity had been reported anywhere in the area.

Egypt do have a heavy security presence in the Sinai peninsula, particularly close to the border. However, the Egyptian denial are viewed sceptically by those who know the area. Apparently the Egyption security official had made no investigations and reasoned purely theoretically on the subject.
The Egyptian government is in conflict with the Bedouin who live there. The Bedouin use their local knowledge to engage in widespread smuggling and are suspected of having helped those who carried out previous attacks in the area.

In April 2010, rockets were fired toward Eilat and Aqaba from Egypt‘s Sinai peninsula, an area from which Islamist militants have operated in the past. A Russian Grad missile hit Aqaba, hours after explosions were heard in Aqaba and Eilat. Initial media reports said two Katyusha rockets were fired at Eilat, one exploded in the waters off the coast and the second near the Jordanian city of Aqaba. No one was injured in that attack and the source of the firing was never established. Jordanian officials later said a Russian made Grad missile hit a refrigerator warehouse in Aqaba, hours after explosions were heard in Aqaba and Eilat.

The rocket aimed at Eilat exploded about 15 meters from the Eilat airport, near several hotels. A branch of the Al-Qaida linked terrorist organization Abdullah Azzam Brigades in Egypt claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Grad missile, known as the BM-21 Grad, is a truck-mounted 122-mm multiple rocket launcher developed in the early 1960s in the Soviet Union. Military experts say it’s maximum range is 25 miles (40 kilometers).

The Israeli air force have on 1.8.2010 hit two Gaza targets in response to the Qassam rocket fired at Israel. The targets hit were an arms smuggling tunnel and a tunnel under the border fence used for carrying out terrorist activity inside Israel. An Israel Defence Force statement after the attack said, “The military will not tolerate any attempt to harm the citizens of the State of Israel or IDF soldiers and will continue to act determinedly and severely against any element using terror against the State of Israel. The IDF holds the Hamas terror organization as solely responsible for the occurrences in the Gaza Strip and for maintaining calm there.”

A Qassam rocket fired from northern Gaza Saturday night hit the roof of a building in an educational institution located in the Shaar Hanegev Regional Council, outside of Sderot. The “Color Red” siren warned residents of the incoming projectile.

Nechama Carmi, who lives in the same building, was washing her car when she heard the siren. “I ran into the stairwell and waited there. When I came out I heard the loudest explosion I’ve heard since Operation Cast Lead. It was very strong and terrifying.” Smoke was seen from the building. Serious damage was caused to three rooms. Had there been people in the building – it would have been a major disaster. “I went to the window to see what it was, and saw a cloud of black smoke behind a building facing the sea. I called the firefighters’ department and informed them of the location. They got there immediately.”
The present violence along Israel’s border with Gaza began Friday morning 30.7.2010, when a Grad rocket fired from the Hamas-ruled territory landed near an apartment building in central Ashkelon. Damage was caused to buildings and vehicles in the area.
A few hours later two mortars landed within the limits of the Eshkol Regional Council. There were no reports of injury in either attack, but eight people suffered from shock in Ashkelon.

SOLIDARITÄT MIT ISRAEL
Wir, eine Gruppe besorgter junger Menschen, sind bestürzt über die neuesten Geschehnisse im Nahen Osten, über die Toten und Verletzten auf Seiten der Besatzung der Schiffe und der israelischen Soldaten, die Opfer einer gezielten Provokation vermeintlicher Friedensaktivisten wurden, die in Wahrheit aber die Hamas unterstützen und eine gewaltsame Konfrontation mit Israel suchten.
Seit Bekanntwerden der Aktion bietet Israel den sogenannten Free-Gaza-Aktivisten an, deren Hilfsgüter nach der Überprüfung auf waffentaugliches Material auf dem Landweg nach Gaza bringen zu lassen. Seit Wochen warnt Israel vor dem Versuch, die nach internationalem Recht legitime und der Verteidigung des Landes dienende Blockade des Gazastreifens zu durchbrechen. Tausende von Raketen wurden in den letzten Jahren von dort auf israelische Städte abgefeuert. Die Blockade soll den Beschuss und jeglichen Waffenschmuggel in den von der Hamas beherrschten Gazastreifen unterbinden. Die auch von Deutschland als Terrorgruppe eingestufte Hamas kämpft gemäß ihrer Charta für die Vernichtung Israels.
Der israelische Versuch, den Schiffskonvoi zu stoppen, war ein legitimer und lebensnotwendiger Akt der Selbstverteidigung und die Reaktion auf eine vorsätzliche Provokation.
Israel befindet sich nicht im Konflikt mit der Bevölkerung Gazas. Humanitäre Hilfsgüter gelangen fast täglich in das Gebiet. Im vergangenen Jahr wurden pro Person mehr als eine Tonne Güter geliefert, über 15.000 Tonnen pro Woche.
Die selbsternannte „Hilfsflotte“ plante eine medienwirksame Denunzierung des jüdischen Staates. Fakt aber ist: Nach internationalem Marinerecht dürfen Boote, die eine Blockade durchbrechen wollen, angehalten und geentert werden. Israel plante keinen Angriff auf eine Hilfsflotte. Fünf der sechs Schiffe folgten der Aufforderung zum Stoppen. Auf dem sechsten stürzten sich Extremisten, bewaffnet mit Pistolen, Messern, Schlagstöcken und anderen Waffen, auf die israelischen Soldaten, die sich von einem Hubschrauber abseilten, und versuchten sie zu lynchen. And then, to the concept of freedom. In every pro Palestinian European forum I hear the left yelling with fervor: “We want freedom for the people!”
Not true. They are never concerned with freedom for the people of Syria or Yemen or Iran or Sudan , or other such nations. And they are never preoccupied when Hammas destroys freedom for the Palestinians. They are onl concerned with using the concept of Palestinian freedom as a weapon against Israeli freedom. The resulting consequence of these ideological pathologies is the manipulation of the press.
The international press does major damage when reporting on the question of the Israeli-Palestinian issue. On this topic they don’t inform, they propagandize.
When reporting about Israel the majority of journalists forget the reporter code of ethics. And so, any Israeli act of self-defense becomes a massacre, and any confrontation, genocide. So many stupid things have been written about Israel , that there aren’t any accusations left to level against her.
At the same time, this press never discusses Syrian and Iranian interference in propagating violence against Israel ; the indoctrination of children and the corruption of the Palestinians. And when reporting about victims, every Palestinian casualty is reported as tragedy and every Israeli victim is camouflaged, hidden o reported about with disdain.
And let me add on the topic of the Spanish left. Many are the examples that illustrate the anti-Americanism and anti-Israeli sentiments that define the Spanish left. For example, one of the leftist parties in Spain has just expelled one of its members for creating a pro-Israel website. I quote from the expulsion document: “Our friends are the people of Iran , Libya and Venezuela , oppressed by imperialism, and not a Nazi state like Israel .”
In another example, the socialist mayor of Campozuelos changed Shoah Day, commemorating the victims of the Holocaust, with Palestinian Nabka Day, which mourns the establishment of the State of Israel, thus showing contempt for the six million European Jews murdered in the Holocaust.
Or in my native city of Barcelona , the city council decided to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the creation of the State of Israel, by having a week of solidarity with the Palestinian people. Thus, they invite Leila Khaled, a noted terrorist from the 70’s and current leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a terrorist organization so described by the European Union, which promotes the use of bombs against Israel .
This politically correct way of thinking has even polluted the speeches of president Zapatero. His foreign policy falls within the lunatic left, and on issues of the Middle East he is unequivocally pro Arab. I can assure you that in private, Zapatero places on Israel the blame for the conflict in the Middle East , and the policies of foreign minister Moratinos reflect this. The fact that Zapatero chose to wear a kafiah in the midst of the Lebanon conflict is no coincidence; it’s a symbol.

Spain has suffered the worst terrorist attack in Europe and it is in the crosshairs of every Islamic terrorist organization. As I wrote before, they kill us with cell phones hooked to satellites connected to the Middle Ages. An yet the Spanish left is th most anti Israeli in the world.
And then it says it is anti Israeli because of solidarity. This is the madness I want to denounce in this conference.
Conclusion:
I am not Jewish. Ideologically I am left and by profession a journalist. Why am I not anti Israeli like my colleagues? Because as a non-Jew I have the historical responsibility to fight against Jewish hatred and currently against the hatred for their historic homeland, Israel . To fight against anti-Semitism is not the duty of the Jews, it is the duty of the non-Jews.
As a journalist it is my duty to search for the truth beyond prejudice, lies and manipulations. The truth about Israel is not told. As a person from the left who loves progress, I am obligated to defend liberty, culture, civic education for children, coexistence and the laws that the Tablets of the Covenant made into universal principles.
Principles that Islamic fundamentalism systematically destroys. That is to say that as a non-Jew, journalist and lefty I have a triple moral duty with Israel , because if Israel is destroyed, liberty, modernity and culture will be destroyed too.
The struggle of Israel , even if the world doesn’t want to accept it, is the struggle of the world.

Israel launched
a new spy satellite
Israel have launched e new satellite, “Ofek 9”,
to be the sixth one to be deployed simultaneously.
Previous Israeli satellites were launched
in January 2008,
in June 2007, and in May 2002.

the Palmachim Air Force
base in central Israel, in line with a
pre-determined plan
unrelated to recent developments.
The Defense Ministry issued an official statement,
saying that the Ofek 9 satellite
“was launched and successfully
injected into orbit by means of
a Shavit satellite launcher.”
There are now seven independent countries in space, and in terms of quality and technology only the United States comes before Israel. Ofek 9 was built in Israel and all of its components were made in Israel.
Ofek 9will be able to broadcast images from around the world within days. On the pictures taken 70-centimeter (and even less) objects which can be seen. Ofek 9 has a radar camera which can see beyond clouds. The Israeli satellites are working in a joint system.One of them completes a round every 90 minutes, then the second one comes along, then the third one, and so on. At a given moment, there is not one place which interests us in the Middle East and is not being shot. A country in the Middle East will not be able to conduct any secret operations without the area being covered by one of our satellites, as there are no longer such moments. Iran won’t be able to transfer different materials without Israel noticing.
The new Ofek 9 spy satellite will be able to detect any material transferred by the Iranians.

Iran continue enriching uranium after the UN Security Council imposed its toughest sanctions yet in an effort to halt the Islamic Republic’s nuclear programme, which Tehran claims is intended for civil energy purposes only.
Saudi Arabia has practiced standing down its anti-aircraft systems to allow Israeli warplanes passage on their way to attack Iran’s nuclear installations, a British newspaper reported today (12.6.2010).
The Saudis have allocated a narrow corridor of airspace in the north of the country that would cut flying time from Israel to Iran, the London Times reported.
Aharaon Zeevi Farkash, who headed military intelligence until 2006 and has been involved in war games simulating a strike on Iran, said: “I know that Saudi Arabia is even more afraid than Israel of an Iranian nuclear capacity.

The fourth Yiddish Summer Program for Yiddish Language and Literature at
Tel Aviv University, sponsored by the Goldreich Family Institute and Beth
Shalom Aleichem, will take place from June 21 to July 15, 2010.
The Tel Aviv program offers a wide range of language instruction to meet
individual student needs. As in previous years, the 2010 summer program
will provide intensive language instruction at five levels, from beginner
classes (including a special class for English speaking students) to a
class for very advanced students.
In addition to language and literature instruction in the mornings, a rich
afternoon program will also be offered: A course in English on “Landmarks
of Yiddish literature”, a series on Yiddish films, conversation workshops,
a tour of Tel Aviv in Yiddish, and cultural events.
A significant number of scholarships are available (for participants
currently enrolled in a university) as well as student housing in the
newly renovated dormitories.

Ehud Olmert offered land swap
Former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert offered to swap Israeli territory near the Gaza Strip and West Bank in exchange for settlement blocs in the West Bank, the Haaretz newspaper reported Thursday, in the most detailed account of the former Israeli leader’s proposed peace offer to the Palestinians. The September 2008 proposal was submitted at a time when Olmert’s ability to negotiate a peace deal was compromised by corruption allegations that eventually forced him to step down.
Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said the Palestinian side made a counterproposal and that further talks were planned. But talks broke down after Israel’s war against Gaza militants a year ago and never resumed. Since leaving office in March, Olmert has said he offered the Palestinians unprecedented concessions, including a broad withdrawal from almost all of the West Bank and shared control of Jerusalem. Olmert has also said he offered the Palestinians small pieces of Israeli territory in exchange for keeping major Jewish settlements in the West Bank. In all, Olmert proposed ceding Israeli territory equivalent to 5.8 percent of the West Bank for a slightly larger piece of the West Bank where 75 percent of the 300,000 Jewish settlers live. The rest of the settlers would be evacuated under his proposal. Among the Israeli territory he offered was nearly 39 square miles (100 square kilometers) near the tiny Gaza Strip and nearly 88 square miles (227 square kilometers) close to the West Bank, much of it from the Judean desert near the West Bank’s southern end, Haaretz said, citing unidentified sources familiar with Olmert’s proposals. The former Israeli leader also proposed a road link through Israel to allow Palestinians to travel between the West Bank and Gaza, which lie on opposite sides of Israel. That highway would have remained sovereign Israeli territory but there would have been no Israeli presence there, Haaretz said. While Olmert has spoken in general terms about his offer, the Haaretz report offered far greater detail. In an interview with Haaretz earlier this week, Abbas said Olmert presented several maps for consideration. And Olmert’s office said in response to Haaretz that the map he presented to Abbas on Sept. 16, 2008 differed from the map Haaretz published Thursday. Erekat said Olmert wanted 6.5 percent of the West Bank in exchange for Israeli territory equivalent to 5.8 percent of the West Bank. The corridor between the West Bank and Gaza would make up the balance.
